Greetings, Smittyheads,

Spring has arrived! So have a lot of community events in the way of festivals and outdoor activities. Below is a taste of things to come.

To keep track of daily events in the community in real time while the newsletter is on break – Bookmark this link http://www.clarkwork.org/eorama/sn/weeklist.asp And check it frequently. Feel free to add your event too!

This is the only edition of Smitty’s Notes going out for the month. I start my annual hiatus from producing the newsletter, attending community meetings and events after hours, and limit my e-mail traffic so as to enjoy spring. It’s my favorite time of year.

Plus, on Friday, April 2, I celebrate 40 years of being on this earth. I’m kind of grooving on this milestone and would love to enjoy the day with my family and friends. However, a monkey wrench has been thrown in my plans: I have to
travel to England this week for a  business trip that popped up unexpectedly and will not be returning home until late Saturday evening. As a matter of fact, as you are reading the latest edition of Smitty’s Notes, I will probably be
flying over the Atlantic Ocean and about to arrive in London. That’s the beauty of technology. I can run, go and still push out this thing I affectionally call “The Beast”—and not miss a beat.

However, I'm really bummed that I will not be “home” to share this day with my compadres, many of whom I have nailed with playful gags on their 40th birthdays over the years. A lesson learned in the last 20 years is this: I will
probably always meet or find a new "friend,” more than likely in a pub near my hotel, to help me celebrate what I’ll be missing at home. The bright side is, at least I’ll have the memory of celebrating my crossing over into a new decade
of life in jolly Old England. April is now deemed “Birthday Month,” and I’ll have plenty of time to play catch up with friends new and old. Hope you do the same this month

As the old saying goes – I’ll see ya when I see ya!

Smitty’s Notes will return in it’s entirety, and the beginning of its Seventh Anniversary Year on April 29th.

Now to the business at hand . . .

Junior League Rummage Sale – April 2 & 3

For newcomers to Winston-Salem, how can I describe the annual Junior League Rummage Sale? It's like Filene's Basement crashing into the annex and education building at Joel Coliseum. It wouldn't be spring in Winston-Salem without it. What you will find is a ton of one-of-a-kind items. A wide range of stuff from "recycled" clothing to toys, plants, sporting goods and even cars. Many of the items were donated by members of the community, including your friends, family and co-workers. Some retail shops have donated new merchandise for the event. More than 60,000 square feet of space will be dedicated to 22 departments - shoes, books, clothing, antiques and more. Proceeds from the event benefit the Junior League's community outreach programs.

Everything kicks off Friday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and continues from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, when prices are discounted. Then from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, shoppers will be given plastic trash bags, with they can fill for
$5 with as much stuff as fits into the bag. Admission to the rummage sale is $3 on Friday, $1 on Saturday morning. Lines have been known to form in front of the Coliseum Annex early on Friday afternoon. One person's refuse is
another's gold mine. You'd better get there early! For more information, contact Heather Smith at 727-0274, Missie Vaughan at 724-4579, or see http://www.jlws.org/.

Winston-Salem Events – “Music in the Streets” Returning before you know it!

With the weather starting to warm up and many of you just itching to be outside, I'm hearing an oft-asked question: When does the Music in the Streets series start up? Y’all just hold your horses. We are a little less than a month
away from the kickoff in early May. However, the word from our good friends at Winston-Salem Events is that an announcement regarding the upcoming season of this successful downtown program will take place on Tuesday, April 13. Hard to believe they are celebrating their remarkable 6th season.

Winston-Salem Events has some exciting plans for 2004, and we are going to have to just a wait a couple more weeks to find out what they are. And I can say, with a fair amount of confidence, that you will not be disappointed. The beautiful thing about all the buzz going on—Alive After Five, Fourth Street Jazz and Blues and Summer on Trade—is something that it has become so popular that everyone anticipates its return every spring and summer. After hibernating during fall and winter, we've alI missed this wonderful chance to listen to great music and spend time with friends in the community. Stay tuned for details.

A Taste of Judaism: Are You Curious?

An event from one of our organizations in the religious community is about to start this month, and you are invited. Temple Emanuel is hold is holding a three-session course this spring titled “A Taste of Judaism." This gathering is
for adults who are curious about Judaism and who would like to explore its relevance in today's world. Participants are invited to explore the Jewish perspective on spirituality, values and community. Classes are designed for "beginners" —for all who are interested in learning more about Judaism, whether they are born into the Jewish faith or not. It is open to the entire community including unaffiliated Jews, non-Jews, interfaith couples, children of interfaith couples, in-laws or teachers of Jews. Anyone seeking more knowledge about Judaism will find the course a good beginning. Held in a comfortable setting and an informal atmosphere, all in hope to encourage free and lively discussion of Reform Judaism's approach to living in our rapidly changing society.

The class will be offered on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 pm, April 14, 21, and 28 and will be led by Rabbi Mark Strauss-Cohn. There is no enrollment fee, but space is limited and registration is required. The course is
sponsored by Temple Emanuel, Winston-Salem, and designed by the Union of Reform Judaism's Commission on Reform Jewish Outreach. For more information about these classes, or to register, call the Temple Emanuel Office at 722-6640.

Samaritan Ministries “Save Room for Dessert" Returns – Sunday, April 18

Sugarholics, like myself, are in for the tasty treat. It’s the return of the hit non-profit event of 2003. “Save Room for Dessert”, a fundraiser for Samaritan Ministries and organized by the Triad Chapter of the American Culinary
Federation (ACF), is back to liven up your taste buds. This event will take place on Sunday, April 18 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Sawtooth Center in downtown Winston-Salem, which happens to be the Sunday after Easter. For me the timing couldn't be more than perfect, because I gave up sweets for Lent again this year. Let me tell you, it has been painful. I love my desserts.

In addition, Save Room will feature live entertainment, kids activities, and a roster of celebrity judges, including Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines, Police Chief Pat Norris, WXII Meteorologist Austin Caviness, Chef Scott from WBFJ 98.3 FM, Chef Alan Romano of the American Culinary Federation, and Michael Hastings from the Winston-Salem Journal. Admission is $15 which will allow you to sample desserts from 20 talented chefs in the Triad.  Kids 12 and under are admitted free!  There will be a formal competition for best dessert, as well as a “People’s Choice” award. Proceeds benefit Samaritan Ministries, which operates a Soup Kitchen and Homeless Shelter. For more information, please contact Sonjia Kurosky at 748-1962. While there, please check to make sure I don’t indulge too much and end up in a sugar stupor.

Smitty's Notes Yadkin River Valley Wine Tour Returns!

Hey folks! I’m testing the waters of doing another wine tour during the month of May. The Smitty's Notes Yadkin Valley Wine Tour held in the spring of 2002 was a huge success and brought it back for 2003 by popular demand and some serious arm-twisting.

However, sign-ups for the tour dates were slow and canceled after the cutoff dates due to the lack of minimum to break even on the cost. Yet in typical fashion in this community, in which everyone waits until the last minute to commit to something, a bunch of you wanted to sign up after the fact. Too late.  In 2002, we had such a blast that this special event deserves a return performance. The tour is a great way to find out about the wine industry that is growing in the Yadkin Valley region. A number of vineyards and wineries have opened up in the past few years. They range from small to large and are worth a road trip.

If there is enough interest from you Smittyheads of resurrecting the tour for May, it will again cover two weekends. On May 15, we will head to the Third Annual Yadkin Valley Wine Festival in Elkin, which despite rain, had 5,000 people in attendance last year. This year some 10,000 people are expected to attend. Visit the Web site at http://www.yvwf.com/ A warmup for the event will take place at Wine Merchants Gourmet. On Saturday, May 22, we will tour three or four wineries. They will include RayLen Vineyards in Mocksville, Rag Apple Lassie Vineyards in Booneville, Shelton Vineyards and Black Wolf Vineyards in Dobson. The pricing will be per trip, includes bus fare, lunch while traveling and other goodies that are being put together.

If you want to take part in the great tour of the Yadkin Valley Wine Country, I need you to e-mail me at freestuff@smittysnotes.com and in the subject line say – “I Want My Wine Tour Now!” More details will be announced at the end of April, if the response is good. To check out photos from 2002, visit these

It’s back, bigger and more awesome than ever! It’s The RiverRun International Film Festival which had it inagural year in 2003 returns for an action back week of independent film watching April 22-25. RIFF has become one of the
premier film festivals in the Southeast.  Presented by the North Carolina School of the Arts, this new festival for the community showcases works by independent, international and student filmmakers. Last year it brought in 11,000 people and screened more than 65 films. This year will be even better. The RIFF office received more than 500 films for this year's festival. After a lot of hard work and late-night film-watching they have pared it down to 110 films screened this year. An incredible 60 percent increase over 2003.

In addition to film screenings, workshops and panels, Several RIFF events or “schoomze fests” as I like to call them, will take place in downtown Winston-Salem, including: April 22, 6-9 p.m.  Truelook, MissionMode and SolidSpace
Block Party Corner of 6th and Trade in downtown Winston-Salem; April 23, 9 p.m. The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Filmmakers Party  R.J. Reynolds Plaza - Main between Fourth and Fifth Avenues  April 24, 7 p.m.  Krispy Kreme Premiere and Gala Stevens Center - 405 W. Fourth Street Gala follows at the Millennium Center - 101 W. Fifth Street  April 24, 11 p.m.  Krispy Kreme Late Night Event Millennium Center - 101 W. Fifth Street  April 25, 6 p.m. SilkRoad Technology, Inc. Awards Dinner North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Filmmaking

Screenings will be shown at the ACE Cinematheque Complex at the NC School of the Arts, which includes three state-of-the-art motion picture theatres;  the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem and home to the Films on Fourth Series. Live music is on the menu for the week and can be heard at The Garage, located in Arts District.

There is much more to tell you about. However, your best up-to-the-minute source is the RIFF Web site that will be updated from now until the festival's closing on the latest screenings and events. Go to http://www.riverrunfilm.com/ and
bookmark it! Also, look out for a special Smitty’s Notes RIFF e-mail the week of April 20. I’ll be taking a hiatus from my hiatus to put the word out, because you need to be a part of this spectacular event.

Habitat for Humanity - BirdFest 2004 – April 29, 30 and May 1

Habitat for Humanity will have its Ninth Annual Birdhouse and Garden Art Sale & Auction at their headquarters  (339 Witt Street). Each year, a large number of works of art for the garden are created and donated by artists from around
the community. Each day from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. come in for “Buy N’ Fly” to browse the hundreds of aesthetically pleasing birdhouses. On Saturday, May 1st, a  live auction will commence at 6:00 p.m. with bidders who can look over birdhouses and other pieces of art while enjoying light hors d'oeuvres provided by 12 of the city’s finest restaurants, as well as libations. The auction begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. One of the pieces you can bid on will be a playhouse built by Habitat's construction crew and volunteers.

Birdfest draws close to 1,000 art enthusiasts each year. Since its inception, this event has generated enough proceeds to finance four Habitat homes. Definitely a worthwhile event. For more information, contact
tina@habitatforsyth.org or call 336-765-8854. You can also visit the Web site http://www.habitatforsyth.org/.

It is designed as a meeting place for those who share this common interest to connect over the Internet. Some lively discussions take place on the message threads.
