Greetings Smittyheads!

Happy New Year! Pardon my delay in getting the newsletter to y'all. I was just squeezing out my last few days of vacation. Been out from the "real job" for two weeks and slowed down "Smitty World" too a bit to enjoy the time off.

2004 starts off with a bang. Films on Fourth had record crowds for its 2004 openers "Lost in Translation" and "Sylvia" this past weekend. There are more films to come this week with the showing of "Hardgoodbyes: My Father" and "The Station" Find out more about the 2004 season at www.cinemasociety.org.

We also have news about the "Oscars" coming to Winston, a dinner and a movie deal with a hint of a new restaurant downtown to come, Salem College's community course program and; the return of Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty and the Krispy Kreme and Smitty's Notes Java and Glaze Winter Music series.

There are plenty of other stuff going on down below in the Events Calendar.

Now to the business at hand...

“Oscar Night America” coming to Winston-Salem!

Pull out your formal wear!. Winston-Salem has been chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to host an official “Oscar Night America” fundraising party on February 29, 2004. The event will be held at Winston Tower (the old Wachovia Building) simultaneously with 45 other cities around the country. Started over 11 years ago, Oscar Night America goal is to mix the excitement of the Academy Awards with supporting charities. The charities benefiting from the event proceeds in Winston-Salem will be the North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Film Festival, the Forsyth Council for Children and Families, Advocates for Children Services and First Star, a national children advocacy organization based in Washington, DC.

The local Oscar Night America event will have all the pomp of the “big show” including a red carpet entrance with guest being greeted by the paparazzi and television cameras. Those attending will receive an official Academy Award program and replica ballot to vote on your favorite film or actor. There will also be a auction to bid on one of a kind items related to the event. This is going an electrifying night similar to the RiverRun International Film Festival opening event held in 2003.  Winston-Salem is starting to turn into Film City. If you are interested in attending the event or want to find out more call 7242831 e-mail ona@jjcff.org Info on Oscar Night America can be found at www.oscar.com

Swinging (Dancing that is) is still Alive.

Swinging dancing is still alive in the Twin City. This dance form was reincarnated to the national stage in the 90’s with bands like the Brian Seltzer Orchestra, Chapel Hill group  - Squirrel Nut Zipper and the famous “Gap” commercials. Events are still being held on a regular basis through dance classes and music shows. Jennifer and David Coulombe, two popular dance instructors who have lead the Triad and Southeast in the return of swing dancing since 1998 are starting a new round of classes for the public this winter. They will begin January 6 and held every Monday for six weeks at the American Legion Hall located at 111 Miller St. You too can learn the Jitterbug and Lindy Hop dance moves and impress friends at your next party without the fear of maybe breaking furniture. Looking to try something new to break the winter doldrums, this might be an option. Cost is $65.00. For more information call 659-6635 or visit their web site www.coulswing.com

Camel City presents - "Dinner and a Movie" every Monday

Camel City Cafe and Wine Bar has launched a new idea for a date night. How about “Dinner and a Movie! Every Monday at 5:30 p.m. you can join them for a dinner for two that will feature a four course meal, wines hand selected for each course and a pass for two to any Carmike Theater film showing in Winston-Salem. All for $49.95 per person. Great idea! If you are looking to impress the new person you are dating or a couple trying to slip away from the daily grind of work or the routine of preparing dinner for the kids, this might be the perfect little way to spice up your romantic life with a fabulous meal and a movie. However, this won’t take away from the all important decision that still will have to be made – Will it be a Chick Flick or Action Movie? Maybe a bottle of wine might help mediate that choice. Camel City Café and Wine Bar is located at 878 W. 4th St. For more information call 734-1797 or visit their web site www.camelcitycafe.com. Stay tuned for news in the next edition from John Hughes on an upcoming announcement of his planned opening of a Charleston Style restaurant on Fourth Street this spring.

Reynolda House "Behind the Scene" Tour

On Sunday, January 11, Reynolda House, Museum of American Art is having their behind the scene tour of the former Estate of the R. J. Reynolds family. Built between 1914 and 1917, here your chance to visit parts of this historic 64 room house and Museum of American Art that you normally would not get to see on a typical “off the street” tour. The staff will take you through the many tucked away rooms of the house and give you a little history behind them. Plus, as an added treat you will get a peak of the new three story 30,000 square foot  education building currently under construction on the grounds which will contain a library, auditorium, exhibition space and much needed storage and office accommodations. With over 55,000 per year, Reynolda House definitely has needed a little elbow room to grow. The tour will start promptly at 2:00 pm and last until 4:00 pm. Admission is $8. Reynolda House is located at 2250 Reynolda Road. For more information call 758-5150 or visit their web site www.reynoldahouse.org

Salem College "Courses for the Community" Returns with New Spring Schedule!

My Mother has drilled it into this thick head of mine during my entire life to do something constructive with my downtime. An idle mind is up to no good. You see, she knows me pretty darn well. It's that mother thing I guess. So, a couple of years ago I found out about some great classes that Salem College offered called "Courses for the Community." The Courses for Community program provides you with a place to engage in the exchange of ideas, to learn the how-to's of life, and to meet other people who share some of your interests. I've had a pretty fun time with each course I've taken over the years and encourage others to enroll, too.

The Spring session starts this month and will run through May and includes classes on writing, non-profit administration, beer and wine education for the connoisseur  and a special monthly tour of the Yadkin Valley Wine region, to name a few. The courses are short in duration, ranging from one to six class meetings. The majority are right after work. Interest in the Course for the Community program at Salem College has been high. The classes offered this Spring are now online for your viewing pleasure. I encourage you to take a look because the program is designed for you. For more Info visit the Web site at www.salem.edu/community or call 721-2855.

Smitty's Notes and Krispy Kreme Java and Glaze Winter Series - Saturday, January 17

In a pre-emptive strike to help fight the winter blues, Smitty's Notes, with the support of Krispy Kreme will once again launch an effort for people to come out of their caves during the winter to mix and mingle. Smitty's Notes Java
and Glaze Winter Series, an event of coffee, hot doughnuts and a lot of conversation will be held once a month on a Saturday evening from January to March at the Krispy Kreme store at 380 Knollwood.

Starting its third year, this program averages between 150 and 200 people during the evening. This cool store is the perfect location for people who want to swing by during the evening hours after dinner to have doughnuts and coffee
with friends. Our twist is tunes for the evening. There's nothing like chilling with friends and listening to music, right? Each month there will be a different local musician performing their original music at the store.

The first performer to kick off the series on January 17th will be Jeffrey Dean Foster. Foster is one of Winston-Salem's hidden jewels. He has headlined a number of Americana bands from The Right Profile, The Carney's and The Pinetops. His strangest band appearance was in 1999 as a guitarist in 10 national commercials with William "Captain Kirk" Shatner for Priceline.com  Show time: 8:00 p.m. -11:00 p.m. Thanks again to Krispy Kreme for supporting this project.
