Greetings, Smittyheads!

February is going to be another busy month for social activities and charitable events. Or a little bit of each. On tap this month: a fundraiser benefiting the Downtown Arts District, a new silent auction presented by a group of
non-profit organizations, a young leaders awards solicitation; and Andy Mabe, who will kick the February Smitty's Note and Krispy Kreme Java and Glaze Winter Music Series into high gear.

Also, the final speaker for Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty! has been announced. It will be Nat Irvin, Sunday op-ed columnist for Winston-Salem Journal, Professor at Wake Forest University MBA program and Executive Director of
Future Focus. Find out more below and sign up today at www.eveningwitheight.com.

We have a winner in the 500th new subscriber contest. Melinda Taylor has won a dinner for four at the Twin City Chop House with Smitty and free admission to ANY Smitty's Notes event in 2004. Dinner will include everything but alcoholic beverages and tip. No joke! People do win on Smitty's Notes!

Now to the business at hand . . .

National Black History Month

February is National History Month, celebrating the contributions the African- American community has made to society over time. I encourage everyone to attend the numerous events available to the public. They will be announced in various media (print, television and radio.) A few events are listed below. You can also go to www.eventorama.org for up-to-date information.

1st Annual Millennium Arts Festival at Millennium Center - February 6.

The Downtown Arts District Association - DADA is having its First Friday Gallery Hop Friday, February 6. However, the big news is the throw down afterward. It’s the First Annual Millennium Arts Festival that will take place at 9:30
p.m. at the Millennium Center located at Fifth and Trade Streets. This fabulous happening will feature live music from musicians who play regularly at venues in the Arts District.
They include: Gomachi, Dan Wilson, The Bo-Stevens,
Liquorhouse Band, Urban Squirrel, The Matt Kendrick Sound Experiment, The BiCoastals featuring Brenda Morie and Martha Bassett, Gordon Jones, Ron Hunter and The Allison Kind Band.

Dance performances by the alban elved dance company. Retail gallery owners are showcasing their works. Also, there will be indie film shorts and a poets corner. A multitude of choices to whatever your artistic taste may be under one roof. Most important, the night will be celebration of creative freedom and to those who give this city a spark. Excellent! All proceeds will benefit DADA to help promote and improve the arts district all year long. Admission is $5.00 For more information visit www.dadaws.org Be there!

Have a Heart - A Non-Profit Collaborative Fundraiser - Saturday, February 7

A unique and first-of-its-kind fundraiser benefiting a plethora of non-profits in the community will take place this weekend in Winston-Salem. On Saturday more than 25 non-profit organizations will collaborate on a silent auction
with a twist called Have a Heart. It will take place from 7:30 pm. to midnight in the Wachovia Center lobby located at 101 N. Main Street. This is the first time I can think of that so many non-profits have come together to put on such
an occasion. Fundraising for any one of them is always a priority and a challenge to help each one fulfill its mission. Corporate dollars are shrinking so that each has  had to come up with creative and innovative ways to raise more
money and awareness. It seems “collaboration” is becoming a new buzzword in Winston-Salem.

On this night, there will be items and professional services for auction that many non-profits could use: strategic planning consultants, grant writers, prospect research software, team building exercises, legal supplies, accounting
services, gift cards to name a handful. The twist is that the organizations have given the planning committee their top five items on their “wish lists.” The non-profit with the highest contributors on the bid items is the winner. This isn’t going to be your typical reserved event, either. No black ties or evening gowns. The dress is casual. Entertainment will be a classical pianist and jazz trio along with the local rock and roll cover band--Mid-Life Crisis that has played at the past Rock the Block events. Catering by Ellyn will provide food and beverages. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the door the day of the event or in advance at participating organization. To find out more information call 725-6011. Hats off to the non-profit community for creating this event. Let's hope the general public comes out to support the night.

Winston-Salem Jaycees seeks nominees for 2004 Outstanding Young Leader Award.

The Winston-Salem Jaycees are soliciting the community for nominations for their first annual Outstanding Young Leader Award. This award is to given to twenty young professionals who are serving the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Nominees will be judged on their contribution to the community, evidence of leadership ability and personal progress. 2004 is the inaugural year the Jaycees will present the Outstanding Young Leader Awards. One thing I can say through my own past experience in the young professional effort, there are a lot of  committed people who are dedicating a lot of time and effort with innovative ideas and leadership. In doing so, are helping to move this community forward and deserve some recognition. If it's not just a "thank you" for their sacrifice. All community organizations that have a young professional constituency are encouraged to submit someone for consideration. Nominees must be between the age of 21 and 39 as of January 1, 2004 and demonstrate exemplary qualities of leadership and community service. Deadline for entries are March 5, 2004. The awards will be given at the Jaycees banquet on Monday, March 29, 2004. For more information visit their web site at.www.winstonsalemjaycees.org or e-mail Renee at creneeboyd@yahoo.com

"Cabaret Clare" with the Winston-Salem Symphony - Saturday, February 7

The Winston-Salem Symphony is having one of its most anticipated productions of the season this weekend. As part of its Saturday Night Live series, it will feature “Cabaret Clare” -- a concert with Clare Fader and the Vaudevillians,
a local favorite, on Saturday 7:00 p.m. at the Stevens Center. The group had a stellar year in 2003, which included an appearance on MTV’s "Real World Las Vegas”  as well as the release of a new CD, “Seventh and Trade.” Now this self-described "cabaret off meds” brings its mix of jazz, folk and mixed in with retro chic to a concer that you don’t want to miss. Afterward, the celebrating does not have to end.  Everyone is invited to the Auction House Bar and Grill
for a "Symphontini" Party. Light snacks will be provided and appetizers and desserts will be available for purchase. Each concert attendee will receive a coupon at the "Cabaret Clare" Saturday Nights, Live! concert for one free
"Symphontini" (a champagne martini--two of my favorites) created just for the event.  The Auction House is located in the Sawtooth Building on Marshall Street. For more information or to purchase concert tickets contact the Winston-Salem Symphony Box Office at  723-7919. Visit its Web site at www.wssymphony.org.

Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty! is in Full Swing!

Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty! - A dining concept that makes eating and meeting a little less awkward--and you might just learn a thing or two. We had a great dinner this past week with Scott Wierman, President, Winston-Salem
Foundation who discussed his organization's great work in the community. Next dinner is February 12 with Lyons Gray, President, Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, North Carolina School of the Arts. Seats are still available. See below for details.

Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty! is NOT, repeat NOT, an attempt at matchmaking; that said, it's a community networking dinner open to everyone at any age. Single, coupled up, or married. Smitty, a.k.a. Jeff Smith of Smitty's Notes, is the host with the most at a dinner of 16 to 24 people (that is, tables of eight), who have expressed a common interest addressed by a guest speaker. Usually the featured guest is someone fairly well known in the community--and in some cases nationally and internationally.

Below is the lineup of the interesting souls who have agreed to take time out of their busy schedules to discuss some unique projects that they're involved in. Many are leaders on such topics as community building, downtown
revitalization, business, education and developing personal relationships.

The best part about Evening with 8 -- Plus Smitty! Is that everyone gets the chance to share experiences and thoughts, mixing good conversation with good food--and all for a registration fee of only $25 plus the cost of dinner.
If this opportunity sounds interesting to you, sign up now. Participants will be notified by phone one week before the scheduled dinner for confirmation, but do sign up TODAY! There are NO restrictions to participate. This event is open to anyone who wishes to be engaged in their community.! Sign up today by going to www.eveningwitheight.com or visit www.smittysnotes.com.
