Greetings, Smittyheads,
Spring is three weeks away, and I'm lovin' it. Good-bye, winter! Hello, longer
days, blooming foliage and warmer temperatures. We are starting to get a taste
of with this week's highs in the 60s! Yippee!
In this edition: news about a downtown economic development fund doing good
deeds, taking time to make a big community puzzle, events for V-Day, taking part
in discussions on the world stage and St. Paddy's Day. Plus, a chance to win
tickets for the March Films on Fourth showings. (See ad below)
Also, we're closing in on the final two dinners of Evening with
Eight - Plus Smitty! for the winter session.
It's not too late to sign up for
and share dinner with J. Walter McDowell, Chief Executive Officer, Carolinas
Banking,
Wachovia Corporation and Dr. Nat Irvin II, President of Future Focus 2020,
Assistant Dean for MBA Student Development and Executive Professor of Future
Studies at Wake Forest University and columnist, Winston-Salem Journal. Both
should bring a lot of lively discuss to the dinner table. Seats are available.

Now to the business at hand . . .
Millennium Fund Update.
Some of you who have been following the newsletter and downtown developments
may recall the mention of the Millennium Fund. This community economic
development war chest was created through the Winston-Salem Alliance and is now
managed separately by a committee of community leaders. It was inaugurated last
year
at this time with an initial goal of $40 million, which was raised to $46.5
million. The “M Fund”, as I like to call it, is made up of mixed cash donations
from corporations, foundations and gifts in kind of industrial property; it has
been hard at work planting the seeds of a number of downtown projects.
Since it was announced, these groups have contributed: $3.8 million to the
Nissen Building renovation that will include 145 loft style apartments in the
heart of Fourth Street Winston; $1.2 million to the Goler Depot Street
Renaissance, a residential community on the northeast edge of downtown being
spearheaded by the Goler Community Development Corporation; loans to non-profits
like Piedmont Craftsmen, which was able to move to its new home in the Arts
District a little more quickly; and, operating support to the Downtown
Winston-Salem Partnership.
Another interesting benefit is the $2 million
loan program for restaurants hoping to open downtown, providing the
restaurateurs yet another source of funding outside the normal channels.
However, the fund's main goal is to continue to provide support where needed in
the arts, entertainment and downtown infrastructure. As things progress
downtown, look for the Winston-Salem Alliance and other economic development
organizations to find ways to position our city for the opening of the FedEx hub
at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro and provide us with
opportunities that may bring new businesses to the community. Not bad for a
year’s worth of work.
SECCAfter Hours "The Big Puzzle Event" - Thursday, March 4
When we were all kids, did you like to play with puzzles? I did and still do. I have to do something to help keep the analytical side of my brain going. On Thursday 5-8 p.m., the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art will present SECCAfter Hours "The Big Puzzle Event" in collaboration with their current exhibition - Al Souza: Inverse Warp Field, which is a collection of puzzles made into some interesting pieces of art. Here's the deal. When you arrive at the event, you'll receive a puzzle piece and given an opportunity to add your own artistic flare to it.
During the course of the evening, everyone will be asked to add their piece to the large jizzsaw puzzle and see what funky piece of art develops from the participants imagination. The more who get involved in creating the puzzle, it becomes a larger fun piece of community art work. For those in corporate America, it will remind you of a team building exercise, but with a twist. There will be plenty of food, beverages and music by The Finks to help stimulate those creative juice. A splendid night to gather members of your Urban Tribe together to help, mix and mingle with other. Admission is free to SECCA members. $5 for non-members. SECCA is located at 750 Marguerite Drive. For more information: Call 725-1904 or visit the web site www.secca.org

Wake Forest University Press - 7th Annual
Irish Festival - March 13
This month brings another "holiday" that many are starting to celebrate around
the area -- St. Patrick's Day. Wake Forest University Press, which is a premier
publisher of Irish poetry, is sponsoring a plethora of events to honor of the
Irish holiday as well as its own 28th anniversary. It all begins on St.Paddy's
Day weekend with the Wake Forest University Irish Festival Community Day to be
held on the campus at Davis Field on Saturday, March 13 from noon-3:30 p.m. The
event will feature a band playing a host of instruments, including flutes,
accordions, pipes and the bodran, the heartbeat of Irish music.
Other festival events: On Tuesday, March 16, the
party continues at the Celtic Café, located in the Towers Shopping Center on
South Stratford Road, with an Irish Music Open Session from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Area musicians will play Celtic and Celtic-inspired music. On St. Patrick’s Day
on March 17, the festival will feature live music and dancing at Shorty’s in
Wake Forest’s Benson University Center at 7 p.m. with The Morris Family
performance. Irish dancers will provide demonstrations and free dancing lessons.
During breaks, the audience is encouraged to recite poetry. Don't forget to wear
your green or else look out for a pinch. Hmmm . . . that might not be such a bad
thing coming from the right person. To find out more go to:

Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty! Final Two Dinners!
Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty! - A dining concept makes eating and meeting a
little less awkward--and you might just learn a thing or two. Just ask the
500-plus people who have met and mingled, formed new friendships and
professional ties in the last three years. (Note: Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty!
is NOT, repeat NOT, an attempt at matchmaking; that said, its a community
networking dinner open to everyone at any age. Single, coupled up, or married).
We're coming into the final weeks of the Winter Session. Only a few more
dinners left with two great and sought after speakers. Don't miss out!
Here are the up coming up dinners for the remains
of the session:
March 17 @ Bistro 420 - J. Walter McDowell III, Chief Executive Officer,
Carolinas Banking, Wachovia Corporation
McDowell is the Chief Executive Officer, Consumer and Commercial banking
operations for Wachovia Corporation in North and South Carolina. He has been
with Wachovia since 1973, rising to numerous banking executive positions
throughout his career. Prior to the merger of Wachovia and First Union in 2002,
McDowell held a similar position with Wachovia Bank of North Carolina in the
late 1990s. He is headquartered in Winston-Salem and Charlotte.
McDowell has been heavily involved
in Winston-Salem, leading a number of community projects in the city and Triad
during his career. He serves on a number of boards. They include Board of
Directors for Winston-Salem Alliance and Piedmont Research Park; Board of
trustees member, Salem College. He is also a former chairman, Winston-Salem
Chamber of Commerce; former general chairman, 1997 United Way Campaign in
Forsyth County; former board member, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va.,
Global Transpark Foundation, North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry,
North Carolina Partnership for Education, Piedmont Triad Partnership, Research
Triangle Foundation; former board of trustees member, The North Carolina Baptist
Hospitals, Incorporated.
McDowell will discuss his involvement in the community and the importance of
volunteering during an individual's career and personal development.
March 25 at Bistro 420 - Dr. Nat Irvin II, President of Future Focus
2020, Assistant Dean for MBA Student Development and Executive Professor of
Future Studies at Wake Forest University; columnist, Winston-Salem Journal
Dr. Irvin specializes in futurist thinking and planning and urban issues. Irvin
is also President of Future Focus 2020
www.mba.wfu.edu/futurefocus,
which works with groups and organizations to examine social, political,
economic, technological and environmental issues that are expected to have the
greatest effects on urban communities by the year 2020. Additionally, he is a
partner in Irvin, Goforth and Irvin, a training and communications consulting
firm. However, many better know "Nat Irvin" as a Sunday "regular" in the
Winston-Salem Journal; his columns address a multitude of issues facing the
community locally, nationally or on the world stage. Irvin has also written for
many magazines and newspapers. This should be a great night of discussion around
the dinner table.
Seats are available. To sign up these or other dinners through March go to
www.eveningwitheight.com or
