Greetings, Smittyheads,

I'll cut the chatter and get straight to the beef. There's a lot of interesting news to share this in edition.

Now on to the business at hand . . .

News from the Downtown Arts District

Zins Wine Shop Café and Bar

The latest percolating out of the Arts District has to do with a combination of favorites for many of you. Food, lounging and wine. Coming this fall is Zins Wine Shop Café and Bar located at 209 W. Sixth Street (former home of Kindred Spirits). The proprietors are Chris and Kathleen Barnes, who are hoping to create a nice little niche for people to enjoy their favorite beverage among friends and add to the growing scene in the Arts District. Zins has a café with tapas items like crudités, cheeses and bruschetta. Heavy snacks include the ever-popular panni style sandwiches, Nouveau California munchies, fondue and more. I like that last idea, because it's communal and can be shared with the gang.

The wine retail shop and tasting area will have over 320 varieties with a rotating 40 wines by the glass. Additionally, look for a full service bar with a complement of beer, wines and liquor. The establishment will be lined with chairs and couches, which the Barnes hope will create the ambiance of a second home. In the front and in the back there will be outdoor seating—or a better word would be "lounging." Construction will begin in a few weeks with an anticipated opening by early fall. Zins Wine Shop Café and Bar will be a welcome addition to the ever-transforming Arts District.

Patina - A Lifestyle Store

Happening next-door to Zins and opening in mid-August is another new shop in the Arts District. Patina is the name and described as a "lifestyle" store featuring clothing, home accents and occasional furniture. It will take over the 3,000 square foot space of the former specialty shop - Snapfingers, which closed early this year located at 217 W. Sixth Street The concept is the innovation of Kelly Peterson who is no stranger to the arts community. She is a former President of the Downtown Arts District Association  - DADA and has made a career in the home accents business.

Patina, which gets it name from a style in the interior design world and finish to wood and metal; will feature various lines of artsy clothes and other apparel, candles, pillows, small furniture and artistic pieces Peterson hopes to cater to the downtown urban dwellers and patrons of the Arts District not only through this funky retail shop inspiration, but also selling specialty designed and packaged gourmet foods similar to Whole Foods including cheesecakes from the popular Greensboro Dessert Chef - Cheesecakes by Alex. Although those is in the downtown revitalization effort have a small grocery store on their wish list, that actually happening is a few years down the road. Peterson hopes adding some "grab and go" items will be a draw for those living downtown. Hours planned for the shop: Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Stay tuned for other Arts District news in the near future.

Heavy Rebel Weekender to the Arts District

It wouldn't be a Fourth of July weekend without the wicked return of Heavy Rebel Weekender to the Arts District. In its fourth year, this three-day musical event with more than 50 groups playing everything including rock 'n' roll,
punk, rockabilly, country, swing is the most interesting downtown events held each year. The festival theme highlights the 1950's era, in which James Dean made being rebelliousness tragically hip, and spawned an entire trend in pop culture.

On tap for the weekend are vendors, vintage clothing, artists selling original creations, and sculptures from old car parts. One of the main attractions is the Saturday car show on Trade Street, which features custom, restored and
classic vehicles made prior to 1968. One rule: No Ford Mustangs of Chevy Cameros allowed unless they are downright cool in appearance—and the organizers' emphasis "really cool". Get it? For the out-of-the ordinary, there is the popular Mud Wrestling Contest, which has moved up from Jell-O in previous years. Scary! Full refreshments will be provided during the entire event near the Millennium Center. Tickets for the event are $60 (3-day pass) and $45 (2-day pass) and can be purchased in advance at the Web site. One-day passes can be purchased at the door. The Millennium Center is located 101 West Fifth Street. For more information: 336-723-7171. For visuals, visit http://www.heavyrebel.net/.

Marshall Street Smokehouse & Wine Bar

The rumors that have been swirling around south Marshall Street the past few weeks are true. The former Leon's Cafe building, which closed last fall has been purchased by a group in Greensboro and will be opening a new restaurant
called -  Marshall Street Smokehouse & Wine Bar. The folks who are starting up this restaurant in Winston-Salem are no strangers to the Greensboro scene.

They are Jeff Drometer, Jason Gentle and Mark Freedman. For those who have dined in the Gate City, he is the owner and "Mark" of Mark's on Westover located at Wendover and Westover Avenue. Renovations are taking place as we speak, and they include a much-needed remodeling of the kitchen and downstairs and installation of Brazilian cherry floors. The new proprietors will offer lunch and dinner which will include a variety of  sandwiches, salads, chicken, salmon and ribs. An opening is anticipated in late July or early August. For you frequent patrons of the former Leon's, the new owners do plan to make full use of the patio and provide live music two to three times a week.

Evening with Eight—Plus Smitty! Returning. Need Input on Speakers!

Evening with Eight—Plus Smitty! is the dining concept that simplifies the process of meeting new friends in the Winston-Salem community, while giving you a chance to learn. The series returns in August. This sophisticated and less awkward way of meeting new people over good food, good conversation and good company will be finishing its remarkable fourth year with the fall session, which will run from late August to October.

On top of meeting great people and talking about life in Winston-Salem, each dinner has a guest speaker who helps set the tone for the evening. Past speakers have included notables in the business, entertainment and non-profit sectors, and various civic leaders. Plus some downright cool people you wouldn't normally sit down and have dinner with. In planning the next session, I have decided to ask YOU whom you would like to have dinner with this fall. Is there someone whom you have been interested in finding out more about? Learning what they do, who they are and in some cases, why they do the things they do? (Still with me?) I have found that the guest speakers are more than willing to take time out their busy schedules to have dinner with interested members in the community. So, whom do
you want meet? Shoot me some e-mails at smitty@smittysnotes.com, and we'll see what we can do.

Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty! has been a smashing success. More than 600 people have dined and mingled, and a lot of new friendships have developed, both personal and professional. This event is now part of our social diet. To find out more about this great event, visit the Web site at http://www.eveningwitheight.com/.

7/16/2004 thru 7/17/2004  - SUPER SIZE ME Films on Fourth at Stevens Center * See details for times  “Appetite suppressant, frat-boy stunt, and anti-corporate headbutt all in one juicy if not always wholesome package, Super Size Me records the consequences of a 30-day McDonald’s-only diet, ratcheting up amused horror as the month of increasingly Unhappy Meals takes a nightmarish toll on its test subject. Morgan Spurlock’s self-starring documentary has nothing new to say about America’s fast-food addiction and obesity epidemic, but there’s no denying its grotesque effectiveness. Conflating activism and performance art, the filmmaker’s method does not preclude a few well-timed hits below the (greatly loosened) belt….” Dennis Lim, The Village Voice Friday July 16 @ 5:30 PM & Sat. July 17 @ 9 PM  - $6. 405 W. Fourth St. For more information:  336-721-1945 http://www.cinemasociety.org/

7/16/2004 thru 7/17/2004  - DOGVILLE Films on Fourth at Stevens Center * See details for times  “Controversial, intelligent and daring, Dogville features a career-best performance from Nicole Kidman.
