Greetings, Smittyheads,

Much to talk about for early June. A bunch of events are starting up, and I've discovered some new places in recent weeks.

On the horizon are a couple of events at SECCA, and in the events listed below you'll find, among other things, information about the Black Dog Jazz Festival at Château Morrissette right across the Virginia border. And don't forget the forthcoming North Carolina Wine Festival at Tanglewood Park.

Like what you see below. Pass it along!

Now to the business at hand.

Cinema SECCA Kicks Off This Summer

The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art—SECCA—has teamed with the Winston-Salem Cinema Society to present a spate of eclectic, newly released films this summer at the McChesney Scott Dunn Auditorium the first Thursday and Sunday of each month. The series, called "Cinema SECCA," will give the growing legions of moviegoers in the city an opportunity to see the latest in contemporary, foreign and independent films by young filmmakers.

The first film that will be shown on Thursday, June 3  at 7:00 p.m. is "Lost Boys of The Sudan," a feature-length documentary that follows two orphaned Sudanese refugees on an extraordinary journey from Africa to America. It was a winner of the Independent Spirit Awards "Truer Than Fiction" Prize. An additional screening will be on Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m. Admission is $7 for the general public and $5 for SECCA members, students, and seniors. Also, SECCA will continue extended hours on the first Thursday of each month from 5 until 8 p.m. so visitors can see the exhibitions before show time. For information on other films to be shown through August, visit the museum's Web site at www.secca.org. SECCA is located at 750 Marguerite Drive. Call 725-1904 for additional information.

Happy Doughnut Day at Krispy Kreme

Hey Folks! One of Winston-Salem's "sweet" corporate citizens is having something I'm sure everyone is going to jump on! Friday, June 4 is "Happy Doughnut Day" at Krispy Kreme. Stop by the local doughnut shop at 259 S. Stratford Road and get one free doughnut. No catch. Just their way of showing a little bit of customer appreciation. Now, for my part in sharing in the fun: If I happen to run into any of you on that day, and if you say to me, "Hey, I heard it's Free Doughnut Day," I'll pull out a coupon for a free dozen. Come, enjoy and spread the Krispy love.

Caribbean Restaurant Opens in Ardmore

Adding to the growing list of ethnic restaurants popping up in Winston-Salem is a new Caribbean eatery. What is the name? Well, its simply called Caribbean Restaurant. Located at 1345 Lockland Avenue in the Ardmore neighborhood along a row of Asian and Hispanic grocery stores, it will feature a plethora of choices for those who like their palate spiced with an influence of Spain. The proprietor is Ricardo Jimenez, an entrepreneur who owns a number of businesses in the Hispanic community. His latest venture is a restaurant that's distinctive and offers the variety that this community has been craving.

The menu will have dishes from Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, with an incredible 277 items, including beverages, appetizers and entrees indigenous to their country of origin. A sample will include: RopaViej, a popular Cuban dish prepared with meat and chickpeas; Sancocho, a hearty stew from the Dominican Republic; and Mofongo - a mashed plantain dish from Puerto Rico. Jimenez notes that Caribbean Restaurant will offer a number of seafood dishes including lobster prepared 15 assorted ways. Also, look for a bar with all ABC permits. I can say that  with a wide selection of choices, you will have to visit quite a few times to scout out what may become your favorite dish. Hours Sun-Thur: 11:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m., Fri Noon-Midnight Sat: 11:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. Telephone: 722-9001.

Thursday Evening Outdoor Music Returns to Stratford Place.

Hey! Looking for an alternative to Alive After Five on Thursday, but still want to listen to some tunes? The merchants at Stratford Place Shopping Center, where Lucky 32, Nawab Indian Cuisine, Blue Ridge Ice Cream, Midtown Café and Dessertery are located, are sponsoring music at their courtyard every Thursday June-August from 7-9 p.m. Why? Heck, why not? The setting is perfect. You can sit out with friends and co-workers after work, get some grub and listen to a little live music. It's free, too! Last year Lucky 32 set up tables in the courtyard that added a cool ambiance to the scene. This is the fifth year of this very successful series at Stratford Place. The first one kicks off Thursday,
June 10 with the Ron Rudkin Jazz Group. Other performers scheduled in June include Buff 'N T returning for their annual visit on June 17 and the Mad Dog Trio June 24. The Stratford Place Merchant's Association sponsors this fine
event. For more information call 724-5454.

Plenty is happening at Greensboro's new trendy spot -  Much!

The Triad is buzzing about the opening of a new, one-stop-shop entertainment center in downtown Greensboro. Its simply called - Much * Temptation* Heaven ! Just as the name implies, it has much to offer that will try to tempt you to heaven. I'll explain further.  Located at 113 South Elm Street, this three story 10,000 square foot funky bar, restaurant and nightclub is billed as a "Feast for the Senses". It's the creation of Joey
Medaloni who has been a success story in downtown Greensboro, lighting a fire under the nightlife scene with  other projects such as the N Club and Sky Bar (both located next to Much), and has been described as the trendy, progressive and hip chap with the Midas touch. He has the pulse on the scene, and all is ventures turn to gold.

"Much" is the downstairs Martini Bar that has a very Moroccan theme and is also the main entrance. It has the ambiance of--well--a cave. The walls are made of an embedded faux rock with a two-story waterfall. In the back there's private "Harem" party room partitioned with long curtains with seating on large pillows and cushions. After warming up with drinks, head upstairs to "Temptation' on the second floor where the 80 seat restaurant is located. The scene is dark, but in a cool kind of way and keeps with the Middle Eastern theme. The food is a mix of entrees including pork, lobster, chicken and beef dishes. However, the main attraction could be the exotic belly dancers swirling around during dinner.

But it doesn't end there. Just opened up is the 6,000 square foot rooftop bar/disco called "Heaven," which overlooks the downtown skyline and which has been packing them in on the weekend with DJ Spinny dropping 80's and Top 40 Tunes.
Medaloni has turned this place into the destination for the cool, tragically hip and urban crowd. If this is the nightlife you have been looking for in the Triad, it's more than worth the drive over to Greensboro. While you are there, ask Joey Medaloni how much it would take to tempt him in bringing his version of nightlife heaven to downtown Winston-Salem? Hours: Bar 4:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m.; Restaurant 6:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. ; Disco 10:30 p.m.-2:30 a.m. Call 370-1311 or visit the Web site www.muchrestaurant.com for more details.
