Greetings Again, Smittyheads!

We're going to jump right to it this edition. We have some new downtown announcements, an opening exhibition at SECCA, an opportunity for the young and engaged in the city to network with community leaders and a place in the Triad to laugh your "tushes" off.

First, we are in the second phase of Smitty's subscriber campaign for winter, with a goal of picking up 500 new subscribers before the end of the month. We did great this fall, following the time-honored tradition of asking you Smittyheads to bring your friends along for the ride. There is an an incentive to sign up. Spread the love with old friends and new, and put them in-the-know!

The 500th new subscriber will get a win a dinner for four at the Twin City Chop House with Smitty and free admission to ANY Smitty's Notes event in 2004. Dinner will include everything but alcoholic beverages and tip. We hope to announce that winner on February 1, 2004

All you have to do is forward this and any edition of Smitty's Notes to a friend. Have your buddy sign up at www.smittysnotes.com, and list your name and e-mail address in the comment section as the referral. Believe me, it will come quicker than you think! Spread the word!

Now to the business at hand . . .

Downtown Happenings!

The Cotton Cafe opening this spring downtown!

Another new eatery is coming downtown on Fourth St this spring. John Hughes, owner of Camel City Café is taking over the space in the Stevens Center formerly occupied by McMillan's Café, which closed at the end of 2003. There had been a rumor last year that Hughes was looking at trying another restaurant concept and wanted to stay in the downtown area. The new restaurant will be called The Cotton Café and will feature a Charleston-style cuisine that has become the rage in the culinary world in the past couple of years. For those of you who aren't addicted to the Food Channel, its a mix of Carolina ingredients with influences from England, France, Spain and Barbados.

The menu will have a variety of Southern dishes, including seafood the Low Country fare synonymous with this South Carolina coastal seaport (can you say, "shrimp and grits"?!). The Cotton Café will seat 150 people, in addition to outside dining during the warm months ahead.  Hughes, who has a long history of creating new restaurants  in the Triad,  hopes to begin renovations soon and open in March—before the rumors start. Camel City Café will remain open and both establishments will be run separately. But hold tight. There's other restaurant news downtown coming in the near future. Stay tuned

MARIA'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT will open in February 2004 at 134 North Spruce Street, the former location of J. Sterling's.  Featuring northern and southern Italian cuisine, as well as some American favorites, Maria's Italian Restaurant will offer a full lunch buffet each weekday as well as evening and weekend dining. For more information, contact owner Maria Rice at mariarice315@hotmail.com (Courtesy of the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership "Downtown Developments" e-newsletter)

Cafe Carolina and Bakery Introduces a Low Carb Menu and Free WiFi Internet Access - Cafe Carolina a new downtown lunch spot located on the first Floor of One West Fourth Street has joined the Low Carb dieting craze. It is now offering breadless sandwiches such as roast beef, turkey and ham. All breadless sandwiches are rolled in leafy lettuce.Tasty! While watching your calories, you can surf the Internet for free. The cafe just installed WiFi. All you need is a wireless modem on your laptop or PDA, and you're connected! If you don't have any of these, the cafe offers free cable Internet, too!

Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership - You, too, can be a member!

Would you like to become a downtown "Partner" and support the many initiatives that are underway to pump new energy and excitement into downtown Winston-Salem? Last year brought another successful "Rock the Block," "Winter in Wonderland" and targeted marketing efforts to bring more people to the central business district for retail, dining and entertainment. The Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership is offering an individual membership for $25, which will make you a card-carrying member for 2004. Many businesses currently belong to the Partnership, but this is a grass-roots campaign to get as many people as possible involved in the "new" downtown effort.

When your membership contribution is received, you will get an "I'm Downtown" decal, monthly copies of the Downtown Developments newsletter via mail or e-mail and the Downtown Winston-Salem newspaper mailed directly to your home. It's a great way to stay plugged into the latest downtown happenings and to support an organization that is working full time to make the center of Winston-Salem the best in the region. Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art - Opening Exhibition Reception - Friday, January 23

The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art - SECCA-will kick off its 2004 exhibition season Friday, 7-9 p.m. with an opening reception of show called "Al Souza: Inverse Warp Field." Souza is an artist who has an unique style in presenting his work—through puzzles. Does this  puzzle you? Don't let it! He received his initial training as an aeronautical engineer. Like many people in the artist community, he left his vocation and decided to use his professional training to create art through the use of jigsaw puzzle pieces found in thrift shops and garages sales. In doing so, he forms everything from landscapes to cartoon characters into vivid paintings and stunning images. Should be an interesting exhibition.

If you are curious about how his artistic style has developed, Souza will give an "ArtTalk" explaining his work at 6:00 p.m. prior to the reception. Also, The HOME House Project, an exhibition of 200 design proposals for low- and moderate-income single-family housing submitted by architects and artists from across the United States and five foreign countries will continue. This show has evolved into a collaboration with the Housing Partnership of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County to construct two homes in the city. One will be in a downtown neighborhood as part of the revitalization of the central business district. Groundbreaking will occur in early 2004.  The Reception and ArtTalk are free for SECCA members, $5 for non-members. For more information, call SECCA at 725-1904 or visit www.secca.org

Piedmont Club Young Professionals "A Night with the Stars" - Friday January 30

After having a number of successful events in 2003, the "young and engaged" community is hoping to build in that momentum by increasing the frequency. One organization is the Piedmont Club Young Professionals which is hosting on Friday January 30, 7:30 p.m. "A Night with the Stars." This event will give anyone who wishes to network with community leaders involved in politics, arts, education, technology and downtown redevelopment an opportunity to meet these "movers and shakers" and get their perspectives on what direction the community is headed. Kicking off the night's event will be the Honorable Allen Joines, who, as mayor of Winston-Salem and previously as assistant city manager for Economic Development, has been heavily involved in retaining and engaging  young professionals.

Other guests for the evening will include Dale Pollock, Dean of the School of Filmmaking at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Don DeBethizy, CEO and President of Targacept, and Dr. Harold Martin, Chancellor, Winston-Salem State University to name a few. Joe Robinson and His Quartet will provide entertainment with performances by local jazz diva Janice Price. Admission is $15 at the door. Hors d'oeuvres, fresh fruit, and cheeses will be available.  RSVP's are accepted but not required. Call 724-7077.  The Piedmont Club is located on the 19th floor of the BB&T Building at 200 West Second Street.  Come find out what's going on in your community.

Usually the featured guest is someone fairly well known in the community--and in some cases nationally and internationally.
