Greetings Again, Smittyheads!

We're going to jump right to it. There is a lot of late-breaking news to lay on you this edition. It includes a funky VIBE, a new restaurant in an old place, a chance to "do over" a do that might not have gone right the first time,
and much more.

A note: Smitty's Notes will be shutting down for its annual hiatus in April. Only one edition will be e-mailed on the first of the month. I use this time to chill from a busy winter, slow down the e-mails and just put the brakes on my routine. However, I will be looking to be out and about more to enjoy my favorite time of year. Plus, I cross over into my 40's at the first of the month. It's a biggie, and I'm looking forward to extending my celebrating from the normal five days to the entire month. Watch Out! If you have April events, please post them by March 29 at http://www.smittysnotes.com/ under "Add Event."

Here to the business at hand . . .

THE VIBE is coming!

We've been hearing about the opening of new restaurants, coffee shops and music venues the past six months in downtown Winston-Salem.  It's a beautiful thing with more of the same to come. However, one thing the central business district might be lacking is a funky, trendy and urban scene. The heartbeat of pop culture in the Twin City. It's bubbling beneath the surface, and I have a feeling it's about to break loose this spring. Word on the street is a new event is about to hit downtown. THE VIBE is coming to the Atrium of the Chatham Building at 305 West Fourth Street, warming up every Friday night starting in April, and immediately following the Fourth St. Jazz and Blues kick off in May. Both will run through September.

So what is THE VIBE? Well, it's the brainchild of three mild mannered professional dudes by day, Howell Dunlap, Joseph Anderson, and Darryl Maxwell. You might have caught these guys at SOHO Alley, where their band Velvet Pavilion performed regularly after Summer on Trade. THE VIBE will be billed as a total audience experience that will include a 40-foot screen in which still and moving images are sequenced and projected with the music. And what is the music? As Funky as it gets, I'm told.

THE VIBE will feature digital samples and revamps modern Hip Hop, R & B, New York and International dance grooves mixed in with a bevy of hot musicians, singers, rappers, and DJ's to work their improvisational magic. The buzz is that some very interesting performers will be showing up over the course of the summer. THE VIBE will be open to all ages, (no alcohol or smoking allowed). Anderson notes "they hope to fill a void, be an important alternative for people of every age, color, and background to come together, have fun, and be a part of a really cool experience." I can groove to that. You can start to feel THE VIBE Friday, April 2. Stay tuned for details.

Bonefish Grill Heading to Thruway Shopping Center

Heard a good rumor a few weeks worth chasing coming out of Thruway Shopping Center that turned out to be true. After a couple of years of being vacant, a new restaurant is taking over the former Houlihan's space at 300 S. Stratford Road. You going to like this one. Bonefish Grill, a casual eatery specializing in market fresh fish and other goodies will be the new tenant. For those of you who haven't heard of this fairly new concept restaurant, they are a Florida based chain with locations sprouting up throughout the Southeast. This will be their sixth North Carolina opening in two years with other locations in Matthews, Greensboro, Asheville, Cary and Wilmington  . Bonefish Grill is part of the Outback Steakhouse, Inc. family which includes Carrabba's Italian Restaurant. Their first Triad venture opened in 2002 at the Four Season Town Centre Complex visible off I-40 in Greensboro. Construction is to begin this week on the 5,500square foot space seating 150-200 patrons with 60 more in a large bar area. The local proprietor is Chip Phillips.

Bonefish Grill has received raves for its sleek hardwood interior, spacious dining room, open kitchen and community tables (I like that). Many describe the restaurant as a "polished casual" dinner place that doesn't have that "chain" feel or attitude. Look for a Florida touch with three-dimensional art created Sunshine State artists.  However, what people will talk about is the food. I've eaten there and you're in for a pleasant experience. Besides the oak-burning cooking method, their tantalizing toppings accompanying the fish make it a tasty treat. Other choices will include pork, beef, chicken and pastas. I'll stop there because I don't consider myself a food critic. You find out soon for yourself. One thing for certain is they'll probably be an excellent addition in a highly visible spot bringing diners and foot traffic after hours to the shopping center. A number of other new tenants are moving in this summer with more news to come. Bonefish Grill is shooting for a June 7, 2004 opening. Hours: Monday-Sunday. Dinners Only. Films on Fourth and RiverRun International Film Festival - Cinephile Social

Hard to believe we are closing in on another year of the RiverRun International Film Festival. 2003 was the festival's inaugural year in Winston-Salem, after leaving Brevard, North Carolina. A lot of great independent films where
shown, filmmaker parties were held as was a gala that turned out to be one of the biggest schmoozefests, the  likes of which I had never seen in Winston.  On Friday, March 26, the Winston-Salem Cinema Society and North Carolina School of the Arts present A Cinephile Social: An evening of food and fun with fellow Triad film fans.

>From 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., before the showings of "The Barbarian Invasions" at 5:30 p.m. and "Fog of War" at 8:00 p.m. For $25 you will get admission to one of the evening movies, complimentary hors d'oeuvres, access to a cash
bar, and a chance to win door prizes and particpate in a fun game of cinema triva. This event takes place at Kabab's Indian Bar and Grill (upstairs) at 321West Fourth Street.  Proceeds will benefit the Films on Fourth and RiverRun
International Film Festival. For more more information call the Run Film Festival office 305 W. Fourth Street. Other ticket locations are: Cat's Corner,  411 W.Fourth Street; Chelsee's Coffee House, 533 N. Trade Street; The Garage, 110 W. Seventh St.; Mary's of Course, 301 Brookstown Ave.; and West End Café,  926 W. Fourth Street.

See the Films on Fourth ad below for a chance for free tickets to next week's showings.

Make Plans for the Do-Over Prom

As mentioned in the last edition, the party of the season is about to drop. Now  . . . was your high school prom a dream or nightmare?  Thank goodness mine wasn't, but for some it might have been. Here's a chance to make it right! Winston-Salem's first Do-Over Prom will take place Saturday, April 3 at 8:00 p.m.the Millennium Center, located 101 W 5th St. Ladies, pull out that old old prom or bridesmaid dress in your closet. Fellas, head to the tuxedo shop and find that funky pastel penguin suit or festive attire, and look out for a one of a kind event!

Retro Prom goers can boogie to sounds of Rubberband, who will take you back with a combination of R&B, soul, funk, rock, disco, reggae and Hip Hop, will keep the dance floor grooving.  Two levels of the Millennium Center will be
filled with other entertainment, retro prom food and beverages. A few surprises lie in store to make the Do-Over Prom the kickoff party of the spring season. No matter what age, here's a chance to relive your carefree high school days. A part of the proceeds from the event will go to the Downtown Arts District Association. DADA, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.

DADA had super 2003 in its efforts to raise awareness of the arts community and the arts district in Winston-Salem. With "collaboration" being the new buzzword in community-building, DADA will feature a Do-Over Prom Dress Sale at the monthly Gallery Hop, Friday April 2. Prom and Bridesmaid dresses are encouraged and will be accepted as a tax-deductible donation at Gallery Three, 202 West 6th Street. High school girls and ladies are encouraged to come to for this unique sale.

Tickets are $15 per person and $25 per couple. They can be purchased, starting March  21, at the following downtown locations; The Millennium Center, Bistro 420, Cat's Corner, The Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, The Hatch Store, Downtown Deli and Downtown Thai. These downtown restaurants to join the prom spirit, will be offering dinner packages.  Advance ticket purchases are encouraged. For additional event and ticket information, call Elevation Media & Special Events at 723-7631.

Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty! Winter Session Finale!

Evening with Eight - Plus Smitty! - A dining concept makes eating and meeting a little less awkward--and you might just learn a thing or two. Just ask the 500-plus people who have met and mingled, formed new friendships and
professional ties in the last three years. (Note: Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty! is NOT, repeat NOT, an attempt at matchmaking; that said, it's a community networking dinner open to everyone at any age. Single, coupled up, or married).

We had a great Winter Session, but there's only one dinner left! Don't miss out!

March 25 at Bistro 420 - Dr. Nat Irvin II, President of Future Focus 2020, Assistant Dean for MBA Student Development and Executive Professor of Future Studies at Wake Forest University; columnist, Winston-Salem Journal.

Dr. Irvin specializes in futurist thinking and planning, and urban issues. Irvin is also President of Future Focus 2020 www.mba.wfu.edu/futurefocus, which works with groups and organizations to examine social, political, economic,
technological and environmental issues that are expected to have the greatest effects on urban communities by the year 2020. Additionally, he is a partner in Irvin, Goforth and Irvin, a training and communications consulting firm.
However, many better know "Nat Irvin" as a Sunday "regular" in the Winston-Salem Journal; his columns address a multitude of issues facing the community locally, nationally or on the world stage. Irvin has also written for many magazines and newspapers. This should be a great night of discussion around the dinner table.

Seats are available. To sign up at http://www.eveningwitheight.com/ or http://www.smittysnotes.com/.
