Greetings Again, Smittyheads,

This edition we have a mixed bag of news: the announcement of a new entertainment venue downtown coming downtown; a wine festival along the New River you might want to check out; a regional poetry slam festival in Greensboro and the launch of a new Web site of movies of all kinds playing in the Triad.

Thanks to all who made it out to the Smitty's Notes Night at the Warthogs game last Thursday. I had a great time meeting all of you and hope you enjoyed the mounds of free stuff given out. You cleaned me out!!! Drawings for the
various restaurant gift certificates at this event will continue through the weekend. Winners will be notified by e-mail. Once confirmed, the winners will receive the certificates by mail. Again, thanks for your continued support!!

Now to the business at hand...

"Th - 411" Coming Downtown this Fall

Just announced is a new entertainment spot coming downtown later this year. It's call "Th-411" located at 411 N. Cherry Street next door to Adams Mark Winston Plaza.  The proprietors are Greg Bell, a promoter and owner of
Groove Entertainment and Nancy Daniels, who are converting the 6,000 square foot space into an upscale multi-entertainment venue that will feature live jazz, classic soul and smooth R&B music, a lounge and sports bar with pool
tables and full ABC permits. Bell has been in the entertainment business in Winston-Salem for a number of years and feels the momentum is shifting toward more people wanting to come downtown, but for a diverse taste of
entertainment.

He also sees a commitment from the city leadership and business community through the recent deal which lead to change of ownership of the Adams Mark Hotel complex to Atlanta hospitality firm - Noble Investment Group, who has begun upgrading the one hotel into the two separate properties - a Marriott Hotel and Embassy Suites. The conversion should be completed by the summer of 2005. This change from those involved in the convention and tourism business will definitely help attract more and larger hotel convention business to the city. The one thing most out of town convention guest want to know after spending all day in meetings is "where is the night life!" Th-411 hopes to be that just a few steps down from the hotels and to the local crowd. Construction is to begin in few weeks with an opening in early fall.

Second Annual River House Wine and Music Festival along the New River

Looking to beat the heat in the Triad this weekend? A pleasant excursion would be a  90- minute road trip northwest toward the Virginia border and to the New River. On Saturday, July 17, the Second Annual River House Wine and Music Festival will be held from noon until 6:00 p.m. Situated on the North Fork along the edge of the New River north of West Jefferson, the River House Country Inn and Restaurant (a renovated 1870s farmhouse) is hosting an afternoon of live music and local wines. Performing in the afternoon is the bluegrass trio of Steve Lewis, Scott Freeman and Josh Scott followed by a cabaret featuring Aaron Price and Vendetta Cream and then swing by MusicSmythe. Six wineries will present their latest, and in some instances, award-winning vintages from the
Yadkin Valley—Hanover Park Vineyards, RagApple Lassie, RayLen Vineyards, Shelton Vineyards, Windy Gap Vineyards and Westbend Vineyards. There will be a crafts exhibition and plenty of food prepared by the River House restaurant. Admission is $35.00 per person.  Bring your lawn chairs and blankets for a fun and relaxing afternoon in the mountains. For more information call 336-982-2109. Or visit www.riverhousenc.com.

The 2nd Annual North Carolina Poetry Grand Slam @ Triad Stage in Greensboro

A convergence of poetic talent in the southeastern part of the country is occurring in Greensboro on Saturday. The Second Annual North Carolina Poetry Grand Slam is set to drop at Triad Stage at 232 South Elm Street in Greensboro. This FREE event is an opportunity to showcase the art of poetry and spoken word to a growing audience in the Triad. Last year's event held at Blandwood Mansion had an overflow crowd of 300 people. The organizers are anticipating a bigger and better event for 2004 and have decided to move it to Triad Stage, one of the premiere performing arts venues in the region. On top of a talented list of poetry artists coming in for the show, they have brought in Bruce George, co-founder of HBO's  Def Poetry Jam as honorary guest judge. Music for the night will be supplied by the legendary DJ Soundmachine from Raleigh, NC. For those who wish to participate in the event, there is a $10 entry fee. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m. Showtime  is at 7:00 p.m. Get there early. Once they reach capacity, the doors will close. For more information visit www.33third.com/ncslam or call 274-0067.

Winston-Salem Rescue Mission Road Race in the Arts District

Coming in a couple of weeks is an event that might be a first for the Downtown Arts District. The Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, at 717 Oak Street on edge of the district, is having a 5K Road Race on July 31 that will start and end on Trade Street. What makes this event interesting is that it's a collaborative effort between what the community we know as the "arts district"—the art shops and studios, restaurants, coffee shops, music and entertainment venues, metaphysical boutiques and small businesses—and the Rescue Mission, now in its 37th year of providing mental, physical and spiritual help for those in need.

The mission supports people who suffer from substance abuse, depression, homelessness and a general feeling that "no one cares." It serves as a beacon of light and a promise of hope in downtown Winston-Salem. Race organizers and the arts district are calling on all runners and invites the community to take part in the resurgence of activity in this part of downtown. Organizers anticipate well over 400 runners for the event. Registration has now started. Fees are  $15 before July 16, $18 before July 30 and $20 on race day. Proceeds from the race will help provide food, shelter, clothing, job placement, housing assistance to mission residents, as well as many needy families in our community. For more information, contact Mike Foster at 723-7729, ext. 171, or send him e-mail at mike.foster@wsrescue.org Register online at www.twincitytc.org.

Sunday Music at Granville Park

As many of you might know, I'm a huge fan of building social capital in our community. Recently, I caught wind of an interesting event taking place this weekend. The West Salem Neighborhood Association, which is one the oldest
neighborhoods in the city bordering Business 40, Peters Creek Parkway and Salem Creek, is sponsoring a series of "Music In The Park" events each month this summer at Granville Park. On Sunday, July 18th at 7:00 p.m., you can enjoy a night of "Hot July Blues" with blues musician James Braxton and his band, followed by an informal jam session. Also up is a free dinner of barbecue, cole slaw, pintos and hot dogs. Plus, a homemade pie contest will be held with a grand prize awarded to the best pie. Time to dig out Grandma's recipe and bake with love!

This music series celebrates the achievements of the West Salem Neighborhood Association and the City of Winston-Salem Recreation Department, which have worked together to take back the Granville Park from drug dealers and address other crime- related issues. New vandal-proof lighting, elimination of graffiti in the gazebo and a general sprucing up of the park has infused the community with new life and energy. The West Salem Neighborhood Association hopes to host other events during the fall and establish an expanded music series for the summer of 2005. Now that's what being a neighborhood is all about!  Come out and join them.

Triadmovies.com - A local online film source.

Movie buffs! (And there are quite a few of you out there.) Are you looking for a comprehensive Web site that lists of ALL of the movies playing in the Triad? Not just the wide releases, but also independent and foreign films? I think
we might have found the source for you. Just launched last month is TriadMovies.com This Web site has a listing of all the movies playing at the multiplexes in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point and theaters in outlying areas.  TriadMovies.com can be your resource for what's playing in the whole region. From Films on Fourth, CinemaSECCA in Winston-Salem to the Carolina Theater, Central Library and the Bryan Place Amphitheater in downtown Greensboro. Plus, the site includes films showing at the last couple of drive-in theaters left in the area located in Eden and Mt. Airy.

An added feature will be ticket purchases online. No need to hop in the car to wait in line. You can purchase your tickets in advance for, say, the Carousel Grande, which shows on a weekly basis more independent and limited-release films than anyone in the Triad (e.g. "Fahrenheit 9/11," "SuperSize Me!," and "Badasss,"  all of which are playing right now). The site also has plans to add ticketing to the Carmike Wynnsong and Films on Films on Fourth in Winston-Salem in the near future. Other features? A list of upcoming films (wide release, independent and foreign), the latest celebrity and movie buzz, and which films are the top-grossing nationwide and more. I think the Triad film connoisseurs might have hit the mother lode to satisfy their movie-watching palate. To find out more visit www.triadmovies.com.

Neighborhood Transportation offers Bicycling Commuter Service

Neighborhood Transportation, the downtown community's only bike shop and peddling transportation center is now offering commuting facilities free of charge to anyone who would be interested in commuting to the Downtown area by
bicycle. This added service is great for those who work downtown and would like to ride their bicycles into work. Also, if space allows they will accommodate folks who would like to ride during lunch as well. The facility has showers, lockers, and secure indoor bicycle parking. Even a bicycle shower. All this is free of charge. The center has expanded its hours to 7-7 M-F, and 10-6 on Saturday and is open late on Gallery Hop nights (the first Friday of each month). Neighborhood Transportation is located at 501 North Liberty Street (corner of Liberty and Fifth Street across from the Millennium Center). For more information call 722-7727 or visit the Web site at www.ntransportation.com.

Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty! Returning. Need Input on Speakers!

Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty! is the dining concept that simplifies the process of meeting new friends in the Winston-Salem community, while giving you a chance to learn. The series returns in August. This sophisticated and less awkward way of meeting new people over good food, good conversation and good company will be finishing its remarkable fourth year with the fall session, which will run from late August to October.

On top of meeting great people and talking about life in Winston-Salem, each dinner has a guest speaker who helps set the tone for the evening. Past speakers have included notables in the business, entertainment and non-profit
sectors, and various civic leaders. Plus some downright cool people you wouldn't normally sit down and have dinner with. In planning the next session, I have decided to ask YOU whom you would like to have dinner with this fall. Is there someone whom you have been interested in finding out more about? Learning what they do, who they are and in some cases, why they do the things they do? (Still with me?) I have found that the guest speakers are more than willing to take time out their busy schedules to have dinner with interested members in the community. So, whom do you want meet? Shoot me some e-mails at smitty@smittysnotes.com, and we'll see what we can do. To find
out more about this great event, visit the Web site at www.eveningwitheight.com.

Morgan Spurlock’s self-starring documentary has nothing new to say about America’s fast-food addiction and obesity epidemic, but there’s no denying its grotesque effectiveness.
