First Friday Gallery Hop
Join the Downtown Arts District for the First Friday Gallery
Hop from 7:00-10:00 p.m. Gallery and Studio opening
receptions, Art and Fine Craft, Music, Dance, Dinner, Drinks,
Entertainment all in a festive atmosphere of Downtown
Winston-Salem. The Arts District is located at the
intersections of Sixth and Trade Streets with the festivities
traveling from Seventh Street to Fifth Street. First Friday
Gallery Hop is every month of the year, with each event
featuring local artists and craftsmen. Sponsored by the
Downtown Arts District Association.
Winter (January-March)
Millennium Arts and Music Festival
- The Annual
Millennium Arts and Music Festival is held at Millennium
Center in downtown Winston-Salem. The Festival features a host
of painters, sculptors, dancers, poets, musicians, and
filmmakers for the arts connoisseur. This event promises to be
a celebration of the rich arts environment of Winston-Salem.
Twin City Kiwanis Club's Pancake Jamboree!
This annual event held
in February draws hundreds of people held at the Benton
Convention Center. What draws everyone is that it's the one of
the few times you might enjoy a down home meal, family-style,
among friends and coworkers. Something we don't do often in
this fast pace world we live in today. . Proceeds benefit the
Twin City Kiwanis Clubs community projects for the year.
Wake Forest Irish Festival-
Wake Forest University celebrates everything Irish at the
Irish Festival held in March. The festival, which is organized
by Wake Forest University Press, the premier publisher of
Irish poetry in North America, includes four days of public
events plus a St. Patrick’s Day Party specifically for the
campus community
Audubon Annual Birdwalk -
Held at Historic Bethabara Park Join the Audubon Society of
Forsyth County for a 2nd Saturday Birdwalk at Bethabara Park.
Black
History Month Celebration.
Held in February Winston-Salem is a community with a rich
African-American history. Many special events mark Black
History Month as a time to remember and celebrate the heritage

Spring
(April-June)
Winston-Salem Warthogs
- This minor
league baseball team kicks off their season every spring Ernie
Shore Field Season runs from April-August at Ernie Shore Field
is located at 401 Deacon Blvd.
RiverRun International Film Festival
– Held each April, this
multi-day event features film screenings, filmmaking workshops
and panel discussions. Other activities planned include a
major Hollywood premiere and gala, filmmakers' parties and a
street festival.
Piedmont Craftsmen Annual Lofty Ideas Tour
- It's hip,
it's hot, it's happening again in downtown Winston-Salem. For
those of us who have an infinite curiosity about how other
people live, here's a great opportunity to take a peek at some
of Winston-Salem's most interesting downtown residences. With
new and rehab construction sprouting up on many corners of
central Winston-Salem, young and established professional and
'empty nesters' are flocking to the many urban living options
now available in a wide variety of price ranges and styles.

Annual Rummage Sale by the Junior League has one-of-a kind
items. There is a wide range of stuff from clothing to toys,
plants and sporting goods in 60,000 square feet of space with
22 departments
Taste of the Town...Derby Style
Held at the Embassy Suites at Twin City Quarter. Taste of the
Town...Derby Style is where everyone comes on Derby Day to
taste the culinary specialties of Winston-Salem’s best
restaurants, watch the Kentucky Derby live on giant screens,
bid on great live auction packages and enjoy their friends.
Oh, and don’t forget to wear your best `Derby Hat` for the
contest.
Hope du Jour -
In May more than 100 participating restaurants donate 10
percent of their sales from breakfast, lunch and dinner to
help fight hunger in Forsyth County. The money is be used by
Crisis Control Ministry's food room to ensure that the hungry
can be fed. Proceeds will be used to purchase perishable foods
such as milk, orange juice, bread, butter, hamburger meat, and
chicken--items not ordinarily donated through local food
drives. It is a wonderful event to help a good cause.
Birdfest Art Auction -
The BirdFest Auction is quite an event with hor dourves,
music, and a live auction. Pieces are submitted for auction by
local premier artists who are nationally renowned for their
work. This is the best event for Spring to see such beautiful
works of art and perhaps end up with one of your own. Get your
bidding paddles ready. Birdfest has generated funds that have
financed Habitat houses for hardworking, low-income families.
Salute! The North Carolina Wine Celebration
- The Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership along with the North
Carolina Grape Council, a part of the North Carolina
Department of Commerce, present - Salute! The North Carolina
Wine Celebration held on Fourth Street between Poplar and
Marshall. The festival includes live music, wineries and
vineyard from around the state right on the doorsteps of the
downtown restaurants.

NCSA School of Filmmaking Student Screenings
- One of the best
little secrets in town that happens once a year. The North
Carolina School of the Arts' School of Filmmaking presents its
annual Student Screenings held every May. You might not be
aware that we have one of the best filmmaking schools in the
country--right here in our own backyard. The Film school, and
staff have been cranking out the next generation of feature
film, video, television and documentary directors, editors,
cinematographers, production workers and screenwriters.
Thursday
Evening Music Return to Stratford Place
- Looking for an
alternative to live music downtown, but still want to chill
after work and listen to some tunes? The merchants at
Stratford Place Shopping Center (where Nawab Indian Cuisine,
and Blue Ridge Ice Cream are located) are sponsoring music in
their courtyard every Thursday from June to August from
7:00-9:00 p.m.
Washington Park Neighborhood House and Garden Tour -
The Washington Park Neighborhood Association host their “House
and Garden Tour” in the spring. The tour of historic homes and
beautiful gardens. The Washington Park area is nearly 100
years old and was originally home to some of the city's first
millionaires who built their residences on the outskirts of a
growing Winston-Salem. The mix of mansions and bungalows is
known for its expansive green spaces and proximity to
downtown, all well preserved by the neighborhood’s efforts to
maintain its history and community presence.
Utsava - India Festival
- The Indo US
Cultural Association of Winston-Salem host this India Festival
The is a gateway to the vibrant historic heritage of “India
Experience India” (Culture, Food, Arts & Craft, History,
Language, Yoga, Music, Bollywood). Activities include a
downtown parade, an assortment of Indian cuisine and a
traditional crafts bazaar. Also, a scintillating display of
folk and classical dance and music and a thought-provoking
display of diverse artifacts, literature, and poetry. Also,
there will be various Interactive demonstrative workshops that
include: yoga, musical instruments, sari wearing, henna, face
painting, arts & craft, etc. The Grand Finale – the showing of
a Bollywood (India film industry) movie.
Greek Festival Held
at the Greek Orthodox Church (435 Keating Drive, off of
Country Club & Silas Crk Pkwy) in May. Here's what's on tap
for the weekend: plenty o' Greek dancing, informative tours of
the beautiful church, and shopping at the Agora (Market Place)
where you can purchase arts, crafts and other goodies.
Music in the Streets Series
- Held
downtown May through September. Thursday night features Alive
After Five with pop and rock. Friday is Fourth Street Jazz &
Blues, while Saturday night is Summer on Trade with bluegrass,
pop, rock, jazz, blues and folk music.
North Carolina Wine Festival
- This event is sponsored by
600/1200 WSJS & NewsTalk 1230 WMFR and is held at Tanglewood
in June. The event is more than just a wine-tasting day, it
became an exceptional Carolina summertime event. This exciting
event for the connoisseur highlights the growing wine industry
in Piedmont North Carolina, and the recognition of North
Carolina by wine lovers across the state and across the
country. North Carolina offers a diverse and complete
selection of wine varieties. It also offers the opportunity to
meet the wine makers and vineyard owners, as well as taste and
compare offerings from most of the North Carolina Wineries—all
in the same day and in one Festival.
Shiner Bock Twin City RibFest
- In
order to have a successful outdoor event you must have the
follow ingredients: tasty food, great music and cold beer. A
host of “ribbers” come from around the country to be named the
Shiner Bock Twin City Ribfest champion and the contest
promises to get ugly. Ribs and sauce will be flying.
Triad Juneteen Festival-
Juneteenth is a celebration of the country’s
longest-running observance of the abolition of slavery. The
Festival will include dance, music, a visual arts exhibition,
book fair, community displays, a youth “fun and learn” area, a
roundtable dialogue, and a marketplace and food vendors. A
jazz concert will be held in the evening.

with your family dog and join your neighbors in the park for a
parade, exhibits, contests, special dog events, a silent
auction and food.
Downtown
Farmers' Market.
Held between April-October Tuesday and Thursday in Downtown at
Cherry and Sixth StreetsThe market features the best in
locally grown flowers and vegetables, along with crafts and
fresh baked goods. The Downtown Farmer’s Market sits at the
western end of the Downtown Arts District, so don’t forget to
visit the district’s galleries, shops and studios while in the
neighborhood. Free
Bowman Gray Stadium Racing Season.
Held from April - August at Bowman Gray Stadium,

Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
. Bowman Gray Racing is a
weekly event held on the flat, quarter-mile oval at Bowman
Gray Stadium. It was home to some of the earliest heroes in
NASCAR. From 1958 to 1971, this asphalt track hosted 28 events
in NASCAR's premier series. Dodge Weekly Series, a
NASCAR-sanctioned event, remains
the featured
division. Other running divisions are the sportsman, street

Summer (July-September)
Magnolia Baroque Festival
- This event has
been touted as one of the best and significant early music
festivals in the Southeast. Baroque is played on early
original period instruments which the masterpieces are come to
life as they were originally performed centuries ago. The
Magnolia Baroque Festival is sponsored by The Thomas S. Kenan
Institute for the Arts.
Heavy Rebel Weekender
- It wouldn't be a
Fourth of July weekend without the wicked return of Heavy
Rebel Weekender to the Arts District. Held in July groups
playing everything including rock 'n' roll, punk, rockabilly,
country, swing is the most interesting downtown events held
each year. The festival theme highlights the 1950's era, in
which James Dean made being rebelliousness tragically hip, and
spawned an entire trend in pop culture. One rap for the
weekend are vendors, vintage clothing, artists selling
original creations, and sculptures from old car parts. One of
the main attractions is the Saturday car show on Trade Street,
which features custom, restored and classic vehicles, the
popular Mud Wrestling Contest, a Beer Guzzlin in 60 Seconds
Contest and a Banana Puddin Eating Contest. Scary! The event
is held at Millennium Center is located 101 West Fifth
Street.
July Fourth Celebration.Held
at Old Salem Witness the re-creation of North
Carolina’s first Independence Day celebration, as observed in
1783, with the reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Other activities from later years will be represented with
Salem Militia forms on Salem Square and a concert by the North
Carolina National Guard 440th Army Band on the Tavern Meadow.

Old-Fashioned
Independence Day Celebration.

National Black Theatre Festival
- Held in August
(in odd numbered years), participants can view more than 90
performances by the best black theatre companies in the world
during this biennial event. It is an American Bus Association
Top 100 Event.
Rock the Block
- This event is held
each September that has turned into a celebration of the
rebirth of downtown and the wrap up party of the summer in
Winston-Salem: Entertainment includes rock 'n' roll, swing,
beach, country, bluegrass and hip-hop/dance club on four
stages along Fourth Street from Poplar to Liberty. Rock the
Block is, supported by the City of Winston-Salem and Downtown
Winston-Salem Partnership.
Fiesta! Hispanic Street Festival
- The Hispanic League of the Piedmont Triad present its
annual multi-cultural street scene-Fiesta. The event is held
in September. Entertainment includes diverse Latin music

Triad German Club's Oktoberfest
- Looking to share in the biggest fall festival in
Europe? The Triad German Club host their annual Oktoberfest
each October What’s in store for the day is a lot of good
German style foods from bratwursts, potato salads, desserts
and of course – Beer. From the Triad German Club to everyone-
“Ein Prosit der Gemuetlichkeit!” a German drinking song that
translates to – “a toast to the comfortable ambiance and
friendliness” – I’ll tip my stein to that. Enjoy!
Annual “Furr” Ball
- The Forsyth
Humane Society host this event at Graylyn Conference Center.
Who would have thought this unique event which is a wonderful
combination of animal lovers, delicious food, music, drink,
dancing and the excitement of a silent and live auction; has
turned into a big fundraiser for the Forsyth Humane Society.
Since its inception, the event has raised. The festivities
include live entertainment, an elegantly catered buffet
dinner, silent and live auction, cocktails and late-night
dancing.

Although Wake Forest
University is not affliated with the Moravian church, the
largest Moravian Lovefeast in the country takes place at the
university every year. Each person receives a beeswax
candle to be lit at the end of the traditional service
following singing of carols. Students and faculty serve
traditional coffee and Moravian buns. This custom
originated in Europe and was brought by the Moravians to North

- From mid-November through
early January, Tanglewood is annually transformed into a
Festival of Lights. It is the most magnificent drive-through
holiday light show in the Southeast with more than one million
lights. The festival features 200 brilliant displays, 70 of
which are animated.
Winston-Salem Jaycees’ Annual Holiday Parade
- Floats, marching
bands, a host local celebrities and other notable characters
riding in convertibles cars waving at the crowd (some will
need to behave themselves). The parade ends up on Liberty
Street at Corpening Plaza
The Downtown Tree Lighting Celebration
- Held at Corpening Plaza includes singing,
dancing, costumed mascots, tasty treats, live music and a
special visit from Santa Claus! This event is sponsored by the
Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership.
Twin City Santa "Miracle on Fifth Street"
Held in December at the Millennium Center at 101 West Fifth
Street. The goal of Twin City Santa is to collect new toys
that will be distributed through the Salvation Army Annual Toy
Drive to children in the Winston-Salem community. The event
has created a new type of energy and enthusiasm within the
young professional community.
Reynolda Road Holiday Estate Tour-
This tour of the historic estates along Reynolda Road includes
Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Southeastern Center for
Contemporary Art and Graylyn Conference Center of Wake Forest
University celebrate the holidays with an open house. Homes
featured are: R.J. and Katharine Reynolds' 1917 64-room
"cottage," James G. Hanes' 1929 English hunting lodge and
Bowman Gray's 1920 French Normandy estate.
West Salem Christmas Cottage Tour
- Christmas
Cottages of Historic West Salem” is the theme for the holiday
tour of homes presented by the West Salem Neighborhood
Association. Featured on the tour are 10 unique mid 19th to
early 20th century homes, ranging from Queen Anne cottages to
Craftsmen bungalows. Christmas music will resound as the
distinctive 1895 Gothic Revival Christ Moravian Church opens
its doors for the tour.
The Nutcracker -
Held at
the Stevens Center
Tchaikovsky’s fairy-tale ballet comes to life as North
Carolina School of the Arts students perform this holiday
favorite. This adaptation of “The Nutcracker” features
glittering costumes and fabulous set designs by the School of
Design and Production. The ballet’s choreography is based on
the original 19th century choreography of Lev Ivanov.
West End Holiday Homes Tour.
Held in
the Historic West End District. For those of you
interested in getting into the holiday mood and check out a
little history of Winston-Salem, the West End Association is
having its Holiday Home Tour. This historic neighborhood,
designed in l890, was originally built as a resort and
residential community. Its curvy streets and terraced lawns
blend beautifully with its Queen Anne, colonial revival,
craftsmen and Victorian-style houses. Many of you have ridden
by them and were probably curious as to what's inside. Well,
here's your chance. The West End Homeowners Association
sponsors this tour every two years.

Hughes, performed by the North Carolina Black Repertory

An 18th Century Salem Christmas Candlelight Tour

An evening candlelight tour of the Miksch House and Tavern
where you will experience the traditions of 18th century
Moravian Christmases in Salem. Participate in singing, holiday
activities, and leave with a taste of the season.
Frank Spencer National Holiday Classic
Held at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Frank
Spencer National Holiday Classic has evolved into a national
basketball tournament including prominent high school teams
and players from across the United States of America. The
format has been expanded to include 16 teams competing in
national and regional brackets.
Kwanzaa Celebration

A unique African-American
celebration focusing on the seven principles of
Kwanzaa--traditional African values of unity,
self-determination, collective work and responsibility,
cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. The
first evening of this city-wide event is sponsored by the
Winston-Salem Urban League. Entertainment, refreshments and
